Tunnel Vision Vs Funnel Vision

Written by on July 14, 2022

At Success & Broker we are big believers in that Vision, regardless of how small or big, it is a great thing. Your vision is ahead of you, your strategy is in front of you and the two work in tandem.

So getting clear on your vision, what you are aiming for and what you are wanting to achieve is important. The way in which you achieve that vision is where some people can get stuck.

The Naked Truth is that we tend to do one of two things when it comes to vision. We adjust or change our vision as it becomes too hard to achieve, life gets in the way or we lose faith or interest. Just to find ourselves looking back with some type of regret of what may or could have been if we just had done X, Y or Z.

Or we stick stubbornly to a vision that no longer serves us just to say “I got there. I did it” , then turn around and realise how much sticking to a non-serving vision has cost us.

There is another way to allow you that little bit more scope in working towards your vision whilst staying open to change and growth. And it’s about approaching your vision with a funnel work style.

Remembering that success happens when you take small steps consistently towards a bigger picture.

Tunnel vision vs Funnel vision

Expand the parameters of your vision ever so slightly to allow you to look a bit more at opportunities right in front of you as they appear, instead of focusing too much on the bigger (maybe scarier long-term goal) and having blinders on to the opportunities left and right of you.

For example, you work your backside off seeking one type of referral source. This is you working in tunnel vision. And it can work, but should such a market change, you may find yourself in a position where your vision and play NEED to change subsequently (and quickly).

However if you work to seek separate referral sources then you’re working in funnel vision. And this will work better for you as you’re now in a position to grow and learn about different propositions. If a market changes, you have multiple resources still working for you and referring you, so it’s not as big of an impact for you.

It’s the same for new business leads. Having one source of new business whether its referrals or word of mouth  can stifles you in the long run. Employing multiple sources of new business from digital marketing, social media, community events or database management can mean that you are running a smart business, with opportunities coming in every day from different sources.

Funnel Vision allows for choice in the long run whereas Tunnel Vision allows for chance in the long run.

Which is better for you? Funnel vision.

You Have The Choice To Change Visions

Employing a funnel vision allows you to capture moments and thought provoking insights that could have been missed to give you opportunities. These opportunities could bring about big changes to your day-to-day and to your bigger goals, so be open to adjusting then changing.

Ask yourself: “Is my vision one worth staying on track for? Or do I need to change it up?”

It is easy to find reason, even excuses not to see through a vision we had in place when we apply a Tunnel Theory. Because your head is down and you’re getting stuck in the tunnel with no light in front of you, holding on to the original plan and not deviating from it.

Alternatively, when your head is up and you’re working with funnel vision you’re open to growth and opportunity. You could have ideas, people and opportunities presented to you that can change your long-term vision. Be open to it.

If It Was Easy…

Remember, IF it was easy to achieve our vision, then we all would have done it and we would be in a position to need no guidance, no influence and no council. The reality is aiming high and achieving big goals can be challenging.

Ultimately choose your vision and you choose how you get there.

There are harder lanes and easier lanes and lanes that seek to provide opportunities for you.
